Mr.
Jeremy Brohier’s speech after being elected President of OWSC for
2010/11
Fellow Wesleyites, thank you for
your confidence to re-elect me as your President for a second term.
The inputs and efforts extended to me by my Vice Presidents the
Secretary, the Asst. Secretary, the Treasurer and Asst. Treasurer
and the untiring efforts of my executive committee ensured that my
vision of stabilizing the clubs finances materialized. It was great
team work and a big thank you to them. I would like to thank the
Patron, Vice Patrons and the Advisory council and not forgetting my
Immediate Past President for their guidance when ever I went to them
to resolve a problem. Finally I would like to thank the general
membership for their patronage to keep this place alive.
Now that a steady foundation has
been laid we are at the threshold of shifting another gear and
moving the OWSC into a higher echelon and boosting its viability.
Whilst doing so we as members should keep promoting this great place
which has so much potential through regular patronage and robustly
marketing the available resources to friends and corporates. More
over the various batches that were formed should continue to
patronize and promote this venue which they consider their second
home.
During my first year whilst
concentrating to stabilize the club the College too benefited
through significant contributions made by the OWSC. To give you a
summary of the benefits were, the handing over of the former
cafeteria with a asset value of Rs150,000.00 a donation of three
diesel drawing stands for Rs16,000.00 a contribution of Rs50,000.00
towards the Wesley Walk, Rs120,000.00 towards the salary of the
rugby coach, a cricket matting worth Rs30,000.00 the rolling of the
college ground costing Rs10,500.00, the colour washing of the
perimeter walls surrounding Campbell park for Rs 45,000.00 and in
addition the cost of Rs93,750.00 absorbed by inviting 20students and
5 teachers to participate at the Aademic forum seminar. All these
contributions amount to a value of Rs515, 000.00. In addition the
OWSC was able to negotiate with Sri Lanka Cricket and obtain covers
for the cricket pitches with an estimated value of Rs 250,000.00.
(Total value of contribution Rs765,000)
Whilst the OWSC remains the dynamic
entity of Wesley and continues to help the school in its efforts to
reach greater heights, there is a growing concern amongst the
fraternity that the School is not paying serious attention to
improve the standards of the more popular sports. Any school is
projected not only by its academic achievements but also through its
sporting prowess. There is no doubt that Wesley has seen progress in
the field of academics and improvements made to its infrastructure
during the past two years but it would be appreciative if the
concerns of the old boys knowledgeable in the respective sports are
addressed transparently using a consultative process amicable to
all. In the modern and rapidly changing world of sports when
competition is at its highest and results are expected, sports
cannot be administered and managed by only an individual. It has to
be managed professionally by a team comprising knowledgeable people
who are unbiased and conversant with the respective sport.
Gentleman, I would like to
congratulate the new committee and welcome them aboard. There is
plenty to be done and your commitment is vital at this crucial
juncture.
The signature event which is the
Double Blue Ball will be held on the 27th of
November2010. I appeal to each and everyone to make their
contributions by obtaining maximum sponsorships for banner display
and advertizing through the souvenir or other donations to achieve
the envisaged target of 2 million. It should also be mandatory that
Wesleyites attend this glittering occasion by making table
reservations before it is too late. It is the event that Wesleyites
should not miss.
I would like to thank the general
membership for their presence today and look forward to your
continued patronage and support to this great place.
Thank You
