Message from the Principal, Dr.Shanti McLelland – January 2011

NEWS, VIEWS and REVIEWS from Wesley

Sad to hear about the floods in Australia and the East of Sri Lanka and the hardship each has to go through at the beginning of 2011. At Wesley we propose to collect dry rations contribute to the Methodist Church and NCC for distribution. Wesley lost three outstanding Wesleyite - Derick Jurianz and Jai Lameer (UK) and Lalith Peiris (C<B), Wesley global sympathies go out their families.

On the 21st a few Old Wsleyites will meet the Principal for an informal goodwill meeting.

The year the Founder's Day celebrations will be extraordinary. Wesley expect Mrs. Christine Weaver (Cartman) and Michael Weaver who is passionate to visit the James Cartman Library, now being refurbished with funding from Mrs. Weaver and Australian OBU. The beautiful Cartman Library will have a new ceiling, lighting, more books and computers for academic research.

The Hostel and the washrooms are in great shape we have hosted many events last year and in January this year once again we will host about 100 with the leadership of Canadian OBU.

On the 14th a few Wesleyites got together and reformed the OBU Canada. It is proposed to have a Cricket Match with St. Benedict's OBU in April/May. Also to coincide with OBU dance globally, a Double Blue Dance in October 2011. Chanaka and Gishan will lead the Cricket Team with Indran. The Double Blue dance will have, Indran, Gishan, Milinda, Yogi, Mark Perera and Rshdi Razik for now.

Hari Parameswaran Wesley Table Tennis Captain launched the $50,000 Awards and Scholarship Fund with C$1500 contribution. From the USA, Late Sivalingam's family initiated the $50,000 fund with a large commitment. Wesley thank the OBU UK for their donation of Pound 2250 handed over by the UK OBU President Tharanga Jayasinghe in Colombo.

In Colombo, Parent and Old Boy Imthishan Mohamed is helping to print an innovative General Work Book/Diary that will be carried by the near 3000 students. The project is another Branding of Wesley image and will cost Rs.50000 that will be financed by contributions.

Three Wesley students who obtained 3 A passes at the Advanced Level will meet the President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on February 1st. Great performance after may years and a Greatr Honour. Well done boys.

The Wesley Choir joined the Wesley Debating team to go on a winning spree. The Choir celebrated along with Mr. Haig Karunatane at the Hilton. The dinner was hosted by Bill Deutom from OBU Australia.

Old Boys Shani Perera and Ranjan Karuanaratne is back supporting Wesley efforts to enhance Wesley image by training the Senior Boys and Teachers.

The Commerce Union will host the Commerce Day 2011 on January 27th. More than 30 schools are expected to attend.

Wesley Cricket Team is currently meeting expectations and hope to bring back the memories of Wesley's cricket performances of Mahadevan athasivam, Edmund Disanayake, Bryan Claessen, Lou Adhihetty, Senthil Sinniah, Lalth Wijesinghe, Everad Schoorman, Darrel Maye, Lucky Goonatilleke, CT Rodrigo, Sarath Wickramaratne, Amaresh Rajaratnam, Mahendra Dissanayake, Chanaka de Mel, Dhanesh Dissanayake, Navin de Silva, Farveez Maharoof to name a few.

The Rugby team is practicing hard with lots of support from old boys and expect to put perform last year.

Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Badminton can expect to do well this time once again with lots of support from Old Boys.

Cub Scouts are amazingly active, while swimming is making a come back. Old Wesleyite Riza Azoor is now Colombo District Scout Commissioner.

Old Boy from Maldives is appointed High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, moving from his diplomatic position in Saudi Arabia.

The School Pavilion, which Wesley took over from Tamil Union in 1940 is back in good shape due to untiring help of Dharshana Liyanage, Dilshan Hossen, Firdouse Gouse and a few other die hard Wesleyites. The Pavilion project was initiated by the Class of 93 who also refurbished the College Staff Room at a cost of Rs.300000. Wesley OBU UK has donated nearly Rs.350000 for this project.


Lot more good news, Lot more to do, and Lot more to achieve in 2011. We can for sure, if all support as true Wesleyites. It is not only the money but the passion for Wesley to Succeed. Wesley is a great place to Teach, Learn, and Play!
