Wesley College - a good start to the schools rugby season
Wesley College recorded a creditable win with two tries in the
last stages of the Singer Under 20 inter-schools rugby encounter
against St. Thomas’, Mt Lavinia with a 18-12 in the match played
at Havelock Park on Friday 1st April. The win for
Wesley over St.Thomas’ is after a lapse of four years.
Wesley opened scoring with 2 penalties booted by full back Rishan
Peiris within the first 20 minutes of the 1st half.
This was after a lot of pressure applied by the boys in double
blue gaining a good territorial advantage. But St Thomas’ went in
the happier side at the breather when they went over for a try
with the conversion successful making it 7-6 in favor of the lads
from Mt.Lavinia.
Being the first game of the season for both teams it was scrappy
and the handling of the ball of the two sides was much left to be
desired as it almost took the glamour off the game. On resumption
the Thomians increased their lead in the tenth minute through an
unconverted try by winger Danuja de Silva thus the scores read
12-6 for St.Thomas’.
The Wesleyites put in more effort in the final stages occupying
majority of the 2nd half in St.Thomas’ territory and
was rewarded with 2 tries. The first with an unconverted try by
Dilaj Nissansala. They put the issue beyond doubt when fly half
Rahula de Silva caught the Thomian defenders napping for a try
with Rishan adding the extra points which gave the Wesleyites to
begin their campaign on a winning note.
Referee Dilroy Fernando.
